Walterville joined over 166 million students in over 180 countries in an Hour of Code this week. The Hour of Code is a movement to encourage the teaching of computer science in schools. Not only can a computer science major earn 40% more than the college average, but the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that by the year 2022, there will be over a million computing job openings! Schools need to begin integrating computer science as a part of their curriculum. Computer science helps nurture logic, problem-solving skills and creativity.
This week, student K-5, partnered up to tackle coding. It was fun to see students engaged and enthusiastic as they problem solved various puzzles . Puzzles ranged in difficulty from dragging and dropping puzzle pieces for the kinders to fifth graders programming "Alex" or "Steve" to sheer a lamb or build a garden in the Minecraft themed puzzle. We will continue to learn code throughout the year, but if your children want to continue on their own, code.org has a variety of puzzles and course levels for students to work through. Scratch and Tynker are also great places where kids can build their own games and learn programming in a fun and engaging environment.
